Subjunctive

Veamos las siguientes oraciones:

• The teacher insists that the school need more computers.
• It is crucial that he come to the hospital.

A primera vista podríamos decir que hay un error en la conjugación de los verbos need y come en las oraciones, pero estamos ante un par de casos de subjuntivos. El subjuntivo es un caso especial en oraciones en tiempo presente y lo usamos cuando queremos enfatizar importancia o urgencia; es por esa razón que se usa el verbo en su forma base en todas la conjugaciones (donde se use el verbo to be simplemente se usará be).

Para poder reconocer una oración con énfasis debemos encontrar un verbo o una frase que indique tal, como los que están subrayados en las oraciones ejemplo (ver lista de verbos y frases al final del post). Veamos otros ejemplos:

• The exhibitor requested that everybody be quite.
• It is essential that you not arrive late (negative)
• It is recommended that all the books be checked (pasive)
• It is necessary that the security cameras be working at 6:00 (continous)

Verbos seguidos por un subjuntivo:

• advise, ask, command, decreed, demand, desire, insist, propose, recommend, request, suggest, urge.

Expresiones seguidas por un subjuntivo:

• it is best, it is crucial, it is desirable, it is essential, it is imperative, it is important, it is necessary, it is recommended, it is urgent, it is vital.
